Happy? Women's day..
So today is International women’s day. A day to celebrate
the spirit of women. A day to celebrate the achievements of women. A day to
celebrate the existence of women. A day to celebrate.. WOMEN per se! And why
not? Women are equally at par with men and have the potential to do everything
a man does. Time and again it has been proved. Women have made their mark in
all fields. And spaces. Imagine a world without women. Unthinkable, right?
So it perfectly makes sense that the world celebrates
women’s day with a bang. What doesn’t make sense is what are we, women of India,
celebrating the women’s day for? Okay, I understand there are a few women who are
successful and have left their mark globally and I totally respect those
women. But what about billions of
them who share the same plight, same agony just for being a woman in this so
called modern and developing India.
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m proud of being a woman and if I have the right to
choose then I would definitely like to be born again as a woman in my next
life. What I’m not proud of is the fact how Indian women are perceived and
treated as in general. For years now, Indian women have been treated as mere
objects and even in this day and age, though there is some change, the
perception remains unchanged for the most.
Everyday we hear in news some or the other crime being
committed against women. And the recent Delhi
gang rape incident left the whole nation shaken and traumatized. Disgustingly,
it demonstrates what these inglorious and demonic beings think of women. This
is just one example which grabbed the country’s eyeballs towards the increasing
crimes against women but there are several other incidents like these which make
you lose your faith in humanity and in that one fearing moment you wish you
were not a woman, especially not in this country!
So there, I honestly see no point in celebrating women’s day
in our country where our women don’t get the respect that they deserve. Instead
of celebrating womanhood, I’ve become more fearful and wary being a woman of
this country. Thanks to the likes of these disgraceful people I am going to be one
paranoid mother. With all the limitations bestowed upon women in our country right
from their birth, preaching what they can do and cannot do from a very tender
age thereby setting boundaries for them; our women have a long road ahead to
break out of the mould and flow unbounded. And when we achieve that we will be
celebrating womanhood in the true sense. Amen to that!
